![]() Three levels of wizard gets you the spell and five levels of artificer gets you extra attack plus additional scaling of spell slots for upcasting. Bard is a strong class, and you could viably make shadow blade work here, as long as you didn't mind waiting until level 10 for your build to come online. ![]() Additionally, both swords and valor bards get extra attack at level 6. Bards get the fantastic magical secrets at level 10 which allows them to learn spells not on their spell list, including shadow blade. Okay, I sort of lied about there being no other options to get the spell and extra attack without multiclassing. If you are starting at a higher level, there are a few other possibilities, though: Unless you're starting at a high level, most people aren't interested in building around a gimmick you can't use until level 8 (or higher). Outside of that, any other character you might want to build requires multiclassing to both gain access to the spell and to the extra attack feature, and that requires a minimum of 8 levels before you can start doing your thing. They also have good ways to protect their concentration built in to the class, and a shadow blade character cares a great deal about concentration checks because they are forced into melee to make the most of the spell, and they will find themselves weaponless if they fail one of those checks. They alone both gain access to the spell natively without multiclassing and gain access to the ability to attack with it multiple times (some people are under the mistaken impression that warlocks also belong in this group, but thirsting blade, the feature that some warlocks get in place of extra attack, specifically only allows you to attack multiple times with your pact weapon which shadow blade cannot be). This is why eldritch knights and bladesingers are really the best users of the spell. Unless they multiclass, of course, but then you get into the same thing with the swashbuckler of giving up more sneak attack dice than the spell actually gives you. ![]() Also they only get to make one attack with it. Arcane trickster can make it work because they don't have to multiclass (giving up sneak attack dice), but it's still not a great spell for them because they can't pick it up until level 7 and they can't upcast it until level 13. The problem with swashbuckler (or any rogue but arcane trickster) is that you're never making more than one attack with it which means that you're (almost) always going to lose damage by using it instead of a normal weapon because you're giving up more sneak attack dice to multiclass and gain access to the spell than the spell actually gives you (the possible exception is if you have no source of advantage besides the spell, but there are so many ways for rogues to get advantage, that seems implausible). Make as many attacks with it as possible.Īny build that cannot gain access to at least third level slots and extra attack by a reasonable character level is probably worse off using shadow blade than not.
